1. What was your first sculpture in wire and when?

The first sculptures I made in wire were a group of life-­size chimpanzees. These were for my final BA degree show at Camberwell College of Arts in 1993. I spent much of my last year as a student observing and drawing animals at London Zoo and these were individual portraits of the chimpanzee troop there.


2. How long does it take to create each artwork? Is it 100% handmade or does it involve some mechanical process?

Making wire sculpture and building up the layers to create the form is an incredibly time-­consuming, slow process. The larger pieces can take a few months to complete. All my sculptures are 100% hand crafted and unique, there are no mechanical processes or moulds involved. For the larger, denser pieces I use a steel armature which acts as a frame over which I work the wire.

3. Do you use other materials moreover of the wire in the inner mold?

For strength, stability and fixing purposes I sometimes use a simple steel armature frame. Over this I create basic skeletal shapes which I attach to the frame then I build up, in layers of wire mesh, the musculature of the animal to the final skin and surface detail. Although some of the internal layering cannot be seen I feel that, if it was not there, the form would lack integrity and as the mesh has holes it suggests the underlying muscle and bone, adding to its sense of vitality and movement.

4. Which subject is the next you would like to create in wire? And which is the biggest achievement you would love to reach?

I am currently working on some private commissions of Canadian wildlife, a 
 sea lion, bison and a brown bear to go to homes in Whistler and Vancouver. I thoroughly enjoyed making the Polar Bear for the Tower of London so I am thrilled to revisit this subject for the brown, grizzly bear.

I would love the opportunity to play with scale and make large size public sculpture within a landscape. I like the sense of theatricality and visual impact large sculptures can have.

5. We know that HRP chose your sculptures to decorate their gardens at the Tower of London. Is there any scoop on a new assignment or a remarkable exhibition?

I live close to Epsom racecourse and several training stables and have been drawing the horses locally. I have wanted to do a project on the Horse for a long time and after a recent trip to Arizona have started work on a life-­‐size wild mustang sculpture. I hope this work will culminate in an exhibition in London celebrating the Horse at the end of 2016, so watch this space...
